Genomics Facility Projects LIMSUser Guide

Submitting Sample Information

Information on individual DNA/RNA samples is uploaded to the LIMS by pressing the “Create Plate” button at the bottom of your project page.  Enter the required information, as described below:

Plate Name: Letters, numbers and underscores only.  Name cannot exceed 20 characters. Plate names should be unique.  Generic names (e.g. Plate_1) will be rejected.

Taxonomic Species: Enter the distribution of each species on the plate (i.e. the number of wells that will contain species 1, species 2, etc.).

Number of samples:  Enter the number of samples to be submitted.  Sample names are entered into the LIMS in plate format, even if fewer than 96 samples are submitted.

After you have entered this information, press the “Submit” button.  This will take you to the “Plates” page.  Now, press the “Generate Template” button.  A template file will appear.  Download the template by clicking “download” in the “Action” window.  Fill in sample names, concentration and volume columns, and save as a text tab delimited file.  Required concentrations of nucleic acids differ depending on project type (See Nucleic Acid Quality Considerations).  Next, upload the template file to the LIMS.  Browse to select the saved file, then press the “Upload Completed Template” button.

Files with associated sample QC data (gel images or capillary traces) should also be uploaded at this time.  See Nucleic Acid Quality Considerations for a description of QC requirements.

**PLEASE NOTE**:  If you are uploading a full plate of sample names (96 samples) the LIMS will automatically assign a position on the plate for an empty well (BLANK) that will be used as a negative control for sequencing.  Therefore, DO NOT load DNA samples onto plates before downloading the sample submission template.
